A Bevy of Beautiful Shawls

Since I'm clearly on a shawl kick at the moment, I pulled all my finished shawls out of their special shawl drawer (yes, they really have one) and laid them out on my bed to compare with each other. I was curious to compare the different sizes of the different projects with each other, since Eiki turned out a bit larger than I was expecting.

Eiki, Brandywine, and Aeolian are basically the same size, with Aeolian edging out the others by a bit. By virtue of its construction, Eiki is larger than Brandywine, which is more of a true triangle shawl – both Eiki and Aeolian are curved to some degree.

The smallest shawl is my small orange Ishbel, then the Swallowtail shawl.

My least favorite shawl is Charlotte's Web, my favorite is Eiki. (Favorites are, as always, changing and somewhat subjective.)

The best shawl I've made is Aeolian, by far.

From left to right, in order of when I knitted them, oldest on the left: Charlotte's Web, Swallowtail Shawl (yellow-orange), Aeolian (turquoise, beaded), Ishbel (small; orange), Ishbel (large body, small edge; purple), Annis (light turquoise), Damask (olive green), Brandywine (mustard yellow), Bellingrath (hot pink), Eiki (dark red). Not pictured: Multnomah, which lives at my mom's house.

Considering the trouble I went to to get the Charlotte's Web pattern, and the Koigu to knit it with, I'm super irked that I don't really like it all that much down the line. I may take the unholy fringe off and reblock, which will help, but at the end of the day, I just don't really like the colors. At the time I knit it the pattern was at the height of its popularity, in 2004ish. I really liked all the different ones I was seeing on the blogs and was just dying to make one. I finally tracked down the Koigu and the pattern at Hill Country Weavers in Austin, TX. My friend Daphne and I were staying in Austin with her mom, who was at a teacher's conference there. That was a fun trip – we were only there for a couple of days, and went to Plucker's, a delicious hot wing restaurant, the world's biggest Half-Price books (so big, in fact, that neither of us bought anything – we were both a little overwhelmed!), a mall, a couple of bead stores, drove through UT Austin (Longhorns, boooo), and stopped at Hill Country Weavers, which is one of the best yarn stores I've been to in this country (and Lord knows I've crossed off quite a few on my list). Here, I finally found the koigu I'd been searching for. I liked the colors I chose at the time all right (they didn't have a huge selection), but they never won me over. I'd like to make the shawl again, but in my signature blues/greens/turquoise.

Under-the-sea colors, if you will. And I wouldn't use Koigu, I'd likely use stash yarns.

I was unable to resist piling the shawls in rainbow succession:

I could go for a few more colors stuffed in there, yes? A true green for sure, and a blue, both of which are on the needles, actually. More on those later, I'm terrible at photographing WIPs. But I'm working on a Snuggery Shawl in the Sanguine Gryphon Eidos I got at Stitches in an awesome green colorway (Hydra), and the Holden Shawlette in a yarn that I lost the ball band for, but got at Stitches I think 2 years ago in a lovely royal blue.

I'm still sick, what is this plague???

A Wedding and an Anti-Wedding

Since I last posted, Felicia got married and I went to Texas, and I also got a job.

I’ve been busy. Heh.

Felicia looked beautiful in her dress (that I stored) and a lovely time was had by all. Here’s some pictures.

The venue: the pavilion at the Hacienda de las Flores in Moraga, CA.
Malvina, Felicia and I before the wedding. I'm glad we made Felicia take these pictures because there wasn't much time to talk to her at the reception.
The new couple walking down the aisle.
Sarah and her son Will.
The wedding cake! It was tasty; no fondant.

So, we left the wedding at nine because Malvina had a day of dance shows on Saturday, and I was (perhaps stupidly) taking a 6 a.m. flight to San Antonio.

My friend Tara had originally been planning to get married the 31st, and I had been planning on going, but there was a rather horrible breakup back in May. A couple of weeks ago, she decided to have a “Let’s Celebrate The Fact That I Didn’t Marry That Douchebag” event on the day of what would have been her wedding at the location of the reception. And I wanted to go to it to support her, so I wound up flying out on Saturday for that night. I rented a car and stayed at our friend Margie’s apartment. We had a good time at the bar and were out until all hours.

On Sunday, after waking up at noon, I headed over to Fire Wok at Huebner Oaks to have lunch with Daphne. It was SO awesome to see Daphne again; when I last visited Texas she was away at grad school in Arizona so I haven’t actually seen her since 2006, when I left Texas.

After that, I went back over to Tara and Cindy’s and we all, plus Margie, went to Jacala’s for dinner. I love Jacala’s!! It is my favorite restaurant in San Antonio because it is just straight up delicious and cheap Mexican food. Word.

Monday, my flight wasn’t until the afternoon, and I wanted to go to Hobby Lobby to look at their bead selection (no Hobby Lobbys in California, *sad face*) so I picked up Tara and we went over to Starbucks and then down to Culebra/1604 to check out the Hobby Lobby and then to the new shopping center on the other side of the freeway. The last time I was in Texas in 2008, that shopping center wasn’t there. We stopped at Books A Million where I picked up a couple things to read on the plane, and then stopped at Subway for lunch.

I had to drop the car back off at the airport around 1, so I headed over there and it took a lot faster than I was expecting so I wound up at the airport supremely early. Luckily, SAT has free wifi so I found a seat near my gate and entertained myself for the next hour and a half.

I was lucky this trip to TX because while it was hot, it wasn’t particularly humid. I didn’t take many pictures (three, to be exact, and they are all blurry bar pictures which you will not get to see) but it was a great trip and hopefully I will be able to go for a longer visit next time.

Vacation Time (for 2010)

I have somewhat injured myself and seriously must lie down for the next two days. Damned lunges and also squats. I am so tired and achy, which may also be a symptom of being dehydrated. Made it into work though, where I am diligently working hard. *ahem* At any rate, I full on feel like crap.

I have been talking to my Texas friend Tara via Facebook and we have decided that we will do the South Beach diet starting after Thanksgiving.  Our reasons are thus: Tara’s getting married next year and wants to look awesome, and I also want to look awesome for this event. I have been wanting to do the 2 week Atkins metabolic reset that starts out your South Beach experience because I really felt great the last time I did it. I was going to do this in January, but having Tara do it at the same time will be a supportive bonus, because no carbs is SO HARD for like three days, you think you are going to keel over and croak, but by the end of the two weeks you are really feeling awesome.

Speaking of Tara’s wedding, I asked her if they’d set a date, and they have! July 31, 2010 – which, honestly, is like the most perfect time for me to take time off the job. I was going to go regardless of workload/meeting schedule, but now I can take a little more time off and really enjoy myself! Since 7/31/10 is a Saturday, I am thinking that I may take off 7/29-8/6/10.  I won’t spend all that time in Texas, but I will certainly spend a chunk!

(Incidentally, I wonder if Tara realizes she is getting married on Harry Potter’s birthday?)

I also found this picture and I think I found the style of dress I will wear to the wedding:

anthrodress

Isn’t that cute? I love Anthropology stuff. Made out of cotton jersey or just regular cotton would be a nice, cool, and flattering fashion statement. I want to whip out the sewing machine this winter, so hopefully I will acquire some Mad Skillz to make it. I haven’t actually sewn anything in about 18 years, so I’m a little, uh… out of practice. I think boots would look awesome with this dress, however being realistic I have to say that boots in Texas in late July would be stupid as it is approximately 800 Billion Degrees that time of year there.

My friend Sarah has started sewing recently and has really surprised me with her enthusiasm for it, so I kind of figure that if she can get going with it, so can I! I’ve been toting a sewing machine around the country for five years, I oughtta use it, don’t you think?

Anyway, I’m pretty stoked about going back to Texas for a few days next summer. It’s my favorite place, after all. I’m a little bummed I didn’t make it out there this year, but every other year seems to be the schedule so this will be right on track.  PLUS my friend Daphne is out of grad school in Arizona so I will be able to visit with her.  I haven’t seen her since I moved away – she was out of state when I was there in 2008.

So, brace yourself, San Antonio. I am returning to your hallowed ground in a mere eight months!! bwahahaha
