WATCHING / LISTENING 2.23.18

TV:

Altered Carbon. This Netflix series is based on a book that I had never heard of but am kind of interested in now. Basically it’s about a far future where they have figured out how to download your consciousness into a disc (“stack”) and can move it from body to body (sleeve). Wealthy people can clone themselves and have available sleeves for whatever dumb things they get up to. People who may get murdered but their stack is still intact, they can get placed in a completely different sleeve regardless of what their original race or gender was. Basically the gist of this story is one of the rich guys gets murdered but it was right before his stack back up so he has no idea who murdered him.

(Just typing that right now… that is stupid – everything is on the cloud. My dang Google docs save automatically every few seconds. Hmm, plot hole).

The rich guy needs a detective so he gets the last Envoy (a specialized soldier who has the ability to easily move from sleeve to sleeve and can be dropped into the middle of combat situations) who had been put away for treason 250 years earlier. The failed rebellion was about the stacks and the unfairness of it all, or something. So, this guy, who was originally an Asian guy, is downloaded into the (white guy) body of the former partner of a police officer lady who probably would have left him alone except for all that.

Anyway, then adventures ensue. One of the things that I thought was funny was that the majority of the show took place in a cyberpunk (think Blade Runner, the aesthetics thereof) version of San Francisco called “Bay City”. Of course, it looked nothing like it actually does, but there were a couple of fun shots of the Bay between SF and Oakland, which were towering skyscrapery cities facing each other. The view kind of looked out like it was from the San Mateo Bridge.

So, final grade: solid B. It was super gorgeous to look at with impeccable set design and world building, but the story was kinda weak. I still liked it though.

MOVIES:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Full confession: I recorded this off HBO thinking it was a documentary about the famous immortal cell line “HeLa” that helped many scientific breakthroughs since the 1950s. I wasn’t far off but you will imagine my surprise when I discovered that it was actually a movie starring Oprah as the daughter of Henrietta Lacks and it was more about writing the book, the family, getting to know Henrietta as a person, and a bit about the controversy about the ownership of cell samples and how the family received no compensation for it. It was a little “after school special” but all in all, interesting. I’m going to pick up a copy of the book and read it later. I find the science and the ethics interesting.

PODCASTS:

Astonishing Legends: Episodes 87-89, Black Eyed Kids. Dudes, this took me awhile to get through all three episodes (it was about 6 hours of content, I believe) and I got really creeped out (in a good way) during the first episode and had to turn it off! Though… it was like 1 in the morning. Anyway, these episodes deep dived into the phenomena of “black eyed kids” – what are they, where do they come from, and are they real. Totally interesting! I’ve started on the three-part Yeti series and I’m stoked!

Casefile. I forget what episodes, but they were interesting. I’ve listened to a number of these over the last few months. I will admit that I like the true crime aspects especially as most of these stories are set in Australia so it’s a different group of crimes (ugh I sound horrible, like, whelp I’ve heard all about the American horror stories! Give me foreign ones now! but like… no really, they’re interesting). I did just download one that is about a boy who disappeared in the 80’s from Martinez, CA, which is in the valley where I live, since I was a kid then I’m not familiar with it. So we’ll see!

I did also listen to a couple episodes of My Favorite Murder, which I guess I like since I’ve listened to like 40 episodes now. Some future ones I have on tap are Dirty John, and Black Hands. I first heard about Dirty John from this article series. My sister has listened to the podcast, which is based on the articles, and recommends it. Black Hands is about the Bain Family murders which took place in New Zealand, and is supposed to be similar to Serial (which I have not listened to nor am interested in for whatever reason). I knew about these murders before and also I think there was a MFM on them.

Anyway, that is what I’ve been consuming lately.

WHIRLWIND TRIP TO LAS VEGAS

Last summer, my friend and I bought tickets to see the Backstreet Boys at their winter residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. It FINALLY rolled around this past weekend and Malv and I met up at the airport at 8am on Friday (having already flown there from our subsequent opposite-ends-of-the-country locations) to begin 48 hours of Vegas ridiculousness.

We were able to get into our hotel rooms early so we dropped our suitcases off and headed to the strip. We got coffee at the hotel Starbucks (every hotel has a Starbucks, it seems like!) and made our way south. On the way we stopped at the M&M store, walked through MGM Grand and New York New York and the high end shops at the Aria before arriving at our destination: The Tea Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental.

This particular hotel did not exist when I was last in LV (that I am aware of). Back in 2009, they were just building the Aria complex. I don’t remember the Mandarin Oriental, but dudes it’s swanky.  Just checked their website and they are a “triple five-star hotel” …whatever that means. But it’s super nice. The tea room is on the 23rd floor with views overlooking the strip.

We have a history of going to high tea and have tried many of the tea rooms around the Bay Area. I had asked Malv about what she wanted to do (since this trip was my idea and we were also going to the Neon Museum and the flagship Taco Bell. As one does.) and she came up with high tea! I hadn’t even thought about it, but what a good idea. And I would say that this one ranks towards the top for everything. You have to grade on a three part scale – ambience, how good the tea is, and how good the food is. This place gets top marks on all!

By far my favorite thing was the curried egg salad croissants – so tasty! The next best was the chicken salad in the little savory cones, topped by asian pear. An exquisite combo of flavors – we both agreed we could have eaten more than one! The scones were delicious and they provided authentic Devonshire cream, jam, and lemon curd. The desserts were fine but I definitely liked the savory plate better. At any rate, solid A experience, would go again, highly recommended.

After that, we went through several of the resorts on the way back to the hotel (and Sephora) where I guess it was Chinese New Year and there were some truly beautiful displays!

After this we were getting a wee bit tired (our concert was at 9pm so we still had to be up for awhile) so we headed back to the hotel. Stopped at Walgreens because I had, once again, forgotten to bring my brush on a trip, and Malvina saw one of her favorite brands in the extended beauty section. Then we went into the SEPHORA, our home away from home.

(We laughed later because here we had traveled hundreds of miles to spend time together in a different city than where we live, and what did we do? All our usuals: high tea, Sephora, Taco Bell…. the Taco Bell dates back to the 90’s so, hahahaha)

Now, full confession, I had just been to Sephora the week before and gotten a few things with my cousin. But that wasn’t going to stop me this time! I got the new White Peach eyeshadow palette from Too Faced, and Malvina got a bunch of things (two lipsticks I think?) and a nail polish set (I may have gotten the same set the week before…)

Then we were back up to our room, then down to the Taco Bell to grab dinner, then back up to eat and get ready for

**~*~*~*~*~~~***THE BACKSTREET BOYS***~~~*~*~*~*~**

Because we are forever 19 at heart.

They were so so fantastic!!!

Us before it started!

At one point before it started, the audience started to lose their minds opposite where we were sitting. Turns out that Shania Twain was there! We saw her come down to the VIP seats in front of us with her bodyguards. She took some selfies with the people down there and seemed nice (from thirty feet away, haha).

this one’s from Malvina too… such an awesome shot of the last moments of the show!

We didn’t get to bed until 1am…. so it was a 22 hour day! We were zonked and didn’t get up till 10 a.m. We headed over to Paris Hotel to have the brunch buffet which was fine but not spectacular. After that we jumped on the monorail and then caught a city bus to Fremont Street, which is the old downtown. We were not super impressed, there is a definite seediness to that area that was not our jam. Nothing happened or anything, just the amount of panhandlers and whatnot was a lot higher than down in the area we were staying. We got Dunkin’ (and when they forgot to make our drinks, the poor counter lady made me take what we dubbed “apology donuts”…she felt bad and I didn’t yell at her, just asked about the drinks so she made me take them).

We found a quiet area away from the smoke and sat for a bit – and off-brand Skyped with Malv’s littles, who were eating dinner and being cute! After that we decided to go back to the Golden Nugget (where it felt a little safer… not that we weren’t safe, just it was a little less rundown-ish? I dunno) and grab a cab, except we noticed a couple of random cabs in the street and grabbed one and headed to the Neon Museum!!

The Neon Museum (or, Neon Boneyard) is a non-profit dedicated to saving old neon signs from Las Vegas’ colorful history. The signs are rare now, because LED lights have overtaken everything as they are more reliable, more colorful, and take less energy. Neon, since it’s a gas, is also fairly unstable, so anywhere that does have neon lights has to have a local artisan who can create and fix them.

My favorite fun fact that I learned (besides the above, obviously) is that the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign was designed by a woman,  Betty Willis! She was one of the only female sign designers of the times (1950s) and that is just amazing. They had another of her signs at the museum as well.

Our tour was scheduled for 6pm because if you book a night tour they turn on the neon lights of the restored signs. The tours are guided and I believe $26 each (cheaper if you go during the day). You can only book online ahead of time; they do not allow for walk-ins. It was easy to book though, you just go to their website and buy the tickets, and they had our wristbands waiting at the front desk.

Our tour guide was pretty great and dropped a lot of neon knowledge on us. And the signs were so cool to see up close!

All in all, a great experience! We had a great time and it was awesome seeing each other. It’s so hard when your BFFs live so far away! But stuff like this – it’s so worth it in the long run.

Plus, you know, we fulfilled a wish of our teenaged selves – see our favorite boy band!!! hahahahaha

FROM THE DRAFT PILE #3

I have been going through some of my old drafts that I never posted over the years (there are over a hundred) and I think I will post some that I find notable every once in awhile. They date back to 2010.

This post I found entertaining because I discuss the purchase of my “new” car (the same one I still drive to this day) as well as that time my father broke his fall with his face.

Post Title: THIS THAT THE OTHER
Date: 2/12

I have been busy having drama the last few weeks!

And then, I was reminded that I had a blog when I received a credit card charge for $190* for the next two years of service, SO I GUESS I BETTER GET WITH IT.

Anyway, since last we chatted, I gave up on my car, which chose to not start several days in a row due to cold/low battery/whatever, so in a fit of righteous indignation and spontaneity, I went and bought a new one. Hahaha! oops.

I LOVE IT.

I actually love it more than I have ever loved a car in my life. Probably because it’s the first car that I truly chose on my own in a color that is perfect for me. (ELECTRIC RASPBERRY aka brilliant turquoise!)

To be fair, I chose the Saturn, but that had more to do with the fact that I needed a car badly, having totalled my truck and only having a very set budget, which the Saturn fell under. I liked the Saturn a lot, don’t get me wrong, but I never felt this all-consuming infatuation I have with the current car.

Other things that have been going on include certain parental figures falling out of their trucks onto their face, which has resulted in the GROWTH OF A MUSTACHE which I am startled by every time I see this particular person. I was up in Sacramento for a fun overnight stay, went to Stitches West, bought a new car, sold the old car, etc., etc.

So that’s what’s been going on here.

Oh and I got my watch, it is beautiful and I love it. Did you know Fossil makes Michael Kors (and Armani Exchange and several other high-end name brands?) When I found that out, I said forget it to the uber-expensive MK watch and hello to the MUCH more affordable Fossil watch, which is nearly identical.

The nice thing is that I used my very last Jason money and Christmas money from my grandma to purchase this, so it’s a nice piece that brings me comfort. And bling.

In the meantime, if you don’t see me around, I’ve been pretty active on Pinterest – hope to see you there!

*Boy, this went up – just paid $250 for 2 years of service in 2018. Joy! Rapture!
