Happy Birthday to Sarah!

Just because I was away in the mountains falling off a cliff* and bruising my back black and purple on the 24th doesn’t mean that Sarah is immune to a best friends Birthday Post!

Yeah that’s right, y’all: it’s ancient(ish) picture time:

Sarah and me, circa June-ish 2001 in South Lake Tahoe for a wedding at a Renaissance festival. I am apparently possessed by a crazy red-eyed demon.

While I’ve known Sarah since we were 12-year-olds singing in the junior high choir, I didn’t have any photos from those days (had I known I’d be posting ancient pictures 18 years in the future on a magical interweb, I would have made sure there was photographic evidence of us, especially in our costumes from PIRATES OF PENZANCE and no I can’t seem to make screencaps from my glorious DVD of our 8th grade production, boo hiss) so I made do with this picture from a trip Sarah, Malvina, and I made to South Lake Tahoe just prior to all of us turning 21, so no gambling/drinking fun was had, but my parents did grudgingly let me drive their new car into another state, so that was pretty cool.

To this day, I'm still surprised my parents allowed me to take their car, but my sexay Buick LeSabre was in dire condition and I doubt it would have gotten much past Placerville, much less up Hwy 50 into the Sierras. Incidentally we purchased weaponry at the festival and so even though you can't see it, we're totally armed in medieval gadgets in the back of the car. And I wonder whatever happened to my POISON RING.

So: Happy Birthday, Sarah! I hope you had a great day and welcome to the thirties club!

P.S. Malvina if you want me to post a picture of you in your ren faire costume with your giant flower hat, I totally will. Muahahaha! I mean, yay!

First FO of 2009

Malvina's Christmas Socks

Well, I finished Malvina’s socks with only a couple hours to spare – literally, finished them up around 11 a.m., and gave them to her around 3 p.m. later that afternoon. She seemed to like them, so that was nice (and blatant flattery post-gifting encourages more product).

Anyway, I have been packing and stuff and I don’t have internets hooked up at the new place yet. I’m getting my uber-cable hooked up on Sunday, but I’m waiting for Robyn to give me their old AT&T modem before I call to hook up internet. I’m getting uber-internets too.

Seriously, I decided to get Direct TV, which is my first experience with satellite, and I hope it is good – don’t tell me if it’s not, I would rather have my spirits crushed on my own time 😛 – and I totally got a year free of Showtime which means: DEXTER DEXTER DEXTER! Also, my three months free of HBO conveniently coincides with the airing of Big Love, everybody’s favorite show about polygamy.

Anyway, so I also ordered some of the new Felici colorways from Knitpicks, which means I will have eight tons of Felici and still haven’t finished the one pair I started. OH WELL. That is my last yarn order until STITCHES I SWEAR IT ON MY DEAD FISH SPARKEY’S GRAVE.

(Did we bury Sparkey or flush him? I can’t remember, it was 16 years ago. I think we buried him in an elaborate fish funeral complete with saluting.)

Uh, yeah, so anyway, I have to go pack 8,234,678 books now.

Another Pair of Socks

I love these socks:

Lizzy Socks - Finished Lizzy Socks - Finished!

Start date: October 3
Finish date: October 17
Pattern used: Lizzy
Yarn: Socks That Rock Lightweight
Needles: Knitpicks US 2 DPNs
Notes: I did change the motif a little – I really don’t like to knit a p3tog or whatever that was up on line 13 or so of the chart, so I just fudged it around so I didn’t have to, and I don’t think you can really tell the difference. I also added a motif on the toe and extended the ribbing to the toe until grafting. I really like them! They fit nicely too, and I think I’ll be making another pair, though with the original toe.

Tomorrow I am getting together with Malvina to give her the orange socks! Today I went to the Yarn Boutique and picked up a couple of the little packets of Soak for her to wash them in. Technically you can machine wash Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn, but I am finding that the less you machine wash handmade socks the better. (I know, right? I drank the koolaid, I guess.)

I looked on my Flickr account and I discovered that to date I have completed 12 projects this year! That is doing pretty good. Last year I finished 15 items, and two of them were sweaters. This year has mostly been socks, but I did make the Swallowtail Shawl, which was pretty fun. With the fall weather coming to town (not so’s you’d notice today, it’s a balmy 77°) I am feeling some hat mojo return, so I will be casting on for a hat in some delish grapey-purple Manos de Uruguay today I think. I also have a ton of Malabrigo I’ve been collecting, so I think I might try Koolhaas or similar in the sealing wax colorway.

I am still pondering the next socks I will cast on, which will be for Abby in Collinette Jitterbug, in the “Jewel” colorway.
